As Jesus taught his disciples to pray in Luke 11:2-4, one request was for “daily bread”. Look at the news and/or search the web and you will see that fertilizer prices continue to rise and becoming unaffordable, and fertilizer is needed for farmers to achieve a high yield of crops. Swarms of locust are devouring crops in Africa again this year, South Africa is especially getting hit hard by these insects. The Russian/Ukraine conflict is causing farmers in that area to struggle to conduct spring planting as they are threatened by the ongoing fighting. In the United States, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture reported millions of chickens and turkeys have died due to a contagious bird flu. And there are more stories from around the world of issues that could result in food shortages and/or high food costs that could be worse than previously predicted. Many of us have not experienced a true food shortage, but we need to pray for those experiencing a lack of food currently and for those throughout the world who could be facing a food shortage this year.
“Biblical prayer demonstrates complete dependence. When we pray, “Give us today our daily bread,” we are acknowledging that God is our sustainer and provider. It is a misconception to think that we provide for our own needs. We must trust God daily to provide what he knows we need.” From the book ‘The Handbook of Bible Application, (page 488), Neil S. Wilson, Editor, 1992 Tyndale House Pub., Inc. However, our prayers in this area are important. In her ‘Elijah’ Bible Study, Priscilla Shirer states,
“Never underestimate the power of a simple prayer,” such as give us each day our daily bread, and “Prayer doesn’t manipulate God. Prayer just unlocks all the things He planned to do for us anyway.”
As we pray, reflect on James 2:15-17: “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” So, if you know someone in need and you have resources, share what you have. Seek out ways to take action and help those who are suffering from food shortages, across the street or on the other side of the world.
Pray for rain and sunshine, seed and fertilizer, the ability for farmers to plant, the end of destructive insects and disease to the crops and livestock, and for all to receive their daily bread from our Father.
Let us pray and turn the key to unlock the plans of God that there will be a supply of daily bread for all the nations.

Continue to pray for Ukraine as the invasions continue in their country.
